Theory & Theorist: The Theoretical Framework in Dissertation Research
Whether a research study is qualitative or quantitative, what is essential at the doctoral level of inquiry is that the theoretical framework be theoretically grounded and the constructs or variables appropriately operationalized within the scholarship of the particular problem of study. A PhD-level study problem is viewed within a theoretical framework selected from the scholarship of the discipline and expected to adhere to the conventions of theory and offer contribution to theory. Some have described the theoretical framework as a blueprint or others as a lens or map. In this session, we will explore multiple metaphors to visualize the formation of a theoretical framework for empirical research.
